Product Description

Expansion vessel, also known as expansion tank, can be found in most domestic pressurised heating systems. If you have a combi boiler, you will have an expansion vessel. This vessel contains air and water from the central heating system, and its purpose is to maintain the right level of pressure in the system.

Expansion tanks are required in a closed loop heating or chilled water HVAC system to absorb the expanding fluid and limit the pressure within a heating or cooling system. A properly sized tank will accommodate the expansion of the system fluid during the heating or cooling cycle without allowing the system to exceed critical pressure limits. The expansion tank uses compressed air to maintain system pressures by accepting and expelling the changing volume of water as it heats and cools.

An expansion vessel is fitted to your water heating system to protect it from increases in pressure.  The vessel itself has two sides inside that are separated by a diaphragm made of rubber. One side is connected to the pipework, this side contains water. The other side has air. The vessel being filled with air means that with sudden changes of pressure within the heating system the effect can be cushioned and absorbed. Pressure changes can be caused by the likes of thermal expansion or a sudden pressure change when a valve is closed.
